There’s nothing I love more at Christmas than curling up with a steaming cup of cocoa, a cosy blanket, and a good Christmas book to read with the kids. And as they grow up, I want to make sure this stays a tradition.
If, like me, you love reading Christmas stories and want to create a holiday reading tradition for the whole family, here’s a list of five Christmas adventure books that will send everyone on a snowy sleigh ride full of adventure this season!
Juniper’s Christmas by Eoin Colfer (7-10years)
This one is number one on the list because, you might have guessed it, it’s my favourite. Juniper's Christmas is a magical adventure that kicks off when Juniper Lane, 11 year old, stumbles upon Niko, a grumpy, tree-loving recluse who seems to be hiding more than his disdain for Christmas.
The kicker?
Niko might actually be Santa Claus—except he's seriously off-duty and has been for years. But Juniper has bigger problems: her mom has mysteriously vanished, and her beloved park is about to be bulldozed.
Desperate and determined, she teams up with the reluctant Santa to save both her family and Christmas itself. Packed with humour, heart, and a sprinkle of holiday magic, this is the perfect read for anyone who loves quirky characters, daring plans, and a reminder that Christmas miracles come in the most unexpected ways.
Pick a pine tree by Patrica Toth (3-7 years)
I recently discovered Pick a pine tree by Patricia Toth and I’ve been reading it to my 3-year-old every morning since then! He absolutely loves this book tha takes young readers and their parents on a journey to picking the perfect christmas tree and decorating it together with lights, ornaments, and love. The rhyming story is fun to read aloud, and the beautiful illustrations by Jarvis make it feel like Christmas in book form. Plus, the new edition has a surprise flip-flap pop-up tree at the end, which my son absolutely loves!
It’s a heartwarming mix of tradition and fun that’s perfect for the season.
A Boy Called Christmas by Matt Haig (6-10 years)
Ever wonder how Santa Claus came to be?
This book takes readers on a whimsical journey to uncover his origin story.
Nikolas is a regular boy from Finland with very little to his name—just a turnip doll and some big dreams. When his father vanishes on an expedition to find the magical Elfhelm, Nikolas sets out on his own journey, accompanied by a reindeer named Blitzen. Along the way, he faces trolls, elves, and the harshest of winters, all while proving that believing in magic is the key to unlocking the impossible.
Combining wit and a dash of holiday spirit, this story reimagines Santa Claus's origins, offering a perfect blend of adventure and heart. This book is perfect for kids between 6 and 10, but to be honest, even though I’m 36, I love it!
The Christmasaurus by Tom Fletcher (8-12 years)
What if your child asked for a stuffed dino for Christmas and got a real one instead?
I’d freak out for one!
But that’s exactly what happens to 10-year-old Willian Trundle, who loves dinosaurs more than anything! For Christmas, he asks Santa for a dinosaur and, by accident, gets a real one instead!
Together, they set off on an adventure filled with reindeer, elves, and a villain called The Hunter, who decides he wants to add the dino to his collection.
Now, this isn't your usual Christmas story—it's quirky, heartwarming, and really fun. But more importantly, it’s a magical tale of friendship, loneliness, and kindness.
The Little Reindeer" by Nicola Killen (4-8 years)
This is a beautifully illustrated Christmas story about friendship and magic. It follows a little girl named Ollie who wakes up on Christmas Eve to the sound of jingling bells. When she steps outside, she discovers a lost reindeer! Together, they embark on a magical, snowy adventure that captures the spirit of Christmas.
Besides the fact that the author Nicola Killen is also the illustrator (and as an author myself who can’t draw better than my 3-year old I find that amazing), the book includes die-cut pages and foil accents, which make the illustrations even more engaging for little ones.
Greenglass House by Kate Milford (10-12 years)
A mysterious inn, quirky guests, and a winter break gone completely sideways—Greenglass House by Kate Milford is the perfect blend of cosy and creepy.
Winter has arrived at Greenglass House, a weathered smuggler’s inn hidden deep in the snowy hills, and twelve-year-old Milo is expecting a quiet and relaxing holiday.
But when a surprise guest shows up late one night, followed by another one, and then another one, everything changes. Suddenly, Milo’s home is packed with strange guests, each with their own mysterious connection to the house. Each of them has a motive for being there, but non of them are telling the truth…
As things go missing, Milo and his friend Meddy must decode the clues hidden in the inn’s history. The book is full of mystery, twists, and turns.
Grab a blanket, some peppermint hot chocolate, and prepare to get lost in Greenglass House—you won’t want to leave.
7. The girl who saved Christmas (8-12 years)

This is another brilliant Christmas book by Matt Haig and the sequel to ‘’A Boy Called Christmas’’.
In The Girl Who Saved Christmas, Amelia’s belief in miracles kicked off the very first Christmas ever, but a year later, she’s seriously losing hope. Her mom has passed away, and she’s stuck in the worst workhouse ever, run by the nasty Mr. Creeper.
Meanwhile, in Elfhelm, trolls are wrecking everything, including Santa’s sleigh, and—yep, you guessed it—Christmas gets cancelled. Fast forward a year, and Father Christmas notices his sleigh’s magic is totally off, so he goes on a mission to find Amelia so she can help save Christmas.
What follows is a wild adventure with a dash of grief, and lots of wits. This book is a heartwarming, adventurous tale full of magic, hope, and the reminder that Christmas is about more than just presents—it's about love, kindness, and understanding that with determination and a little belief, you can succeed;)
That's it for now. I hope you'll have fun reading these Christmas books together.
Happy reading, and may your Christmas be as magical as these stories!
Christelle, Josee and Archie
